Competition for the Development of Palace of Culture Cortyards

The design provides for the development of the internal courtyards of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. The newly developed spaces are intended to accommodate exhibitions, conferences and fairs. The new development is almost invisible from outside the Palace. Only discrete views of the floor from the Emilii Plater Street forefront of the building, filtering through transparent, glass gate openings into the courtyard interiors, and the lighting and visual information system are signals of contemporary design intervention. The added wing stands out with its architectural detail arrangements and materials used. The envelope of the newly created interiors is transparent, with the elevations of the Palace courtyards forming their walls, as it were. The new structure incorporated into the courtyard space is to be uniform, both in plan and in section, as well as in the choice of materials. Steel sheet casing of ceiling coffers and beams, interior and façade columns, with oxide finish, is filled with glass, metal mesh and black terrazzo.
