Competition for the development of the Granary Island in Gdansk.

The building is erected on the ruins of granary walls, with an expressive shape of the interiors “cut out” in its disciplined, regular brick form. Thus, in a sense, the museum is a negative of a “sign building” – a stand-alone sculptural form, while serving the same function of a landmark, symbol of the city. Its location of on the tip of the island vis ? vis the Old Town, the famous crane, nearby the Maritime Museum, and the function itself make it suited for this form of expression. The northern wall rising from water is a dark, cold-radiating regular silhouette whose characteristic openings following the delicate vaulted form of the ceilings are filled with warm light bouncing off their ceramic surfaces. The museum was conceived as a sign, but one set within the regular geometry of a block of urban development, intuitively evoking associations with Gdańsk’s characteristic buildings and representations of objects related to the sea.
