Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw

Creation of the spatial framework for cultural and social life in Powiśle, referring to Oskar Hansen's open form, was the main inspiration for the development of the Academy of Fine Arts at Warsaw’s Wybrzeże Kościuszkowskie.

A four-story building – an extension of the existing building – housing the Conservation and Sculpture Department completes the gap in the street's frontage. Connecting the building with surroundings and merging the old and the new architecture was essential to the project. From the Wybrzeże Kościuszkowskie side, the facade maintains divisions and rhythm specific to neighbouring buildings. From the outside, the glazed surface of windows reflects trees growing on the other side of the street and from the inside, the view opens to the boulevards. The new building connects to the historic building on each level, and the courtyard for exhibitions arose between them. On one side, it is closed by the glass facade of the new wing, and on the other by the restored wall of the old building.
