Competition for the Bydgoszcz Town Hall

The new city hall building with its internal organization is based on a trace of three houses that once stood on the site. On Niedźwiedzia Street, the outline of the first house is filled by an office building, the perimeter of the middle house delimits a multi-functional hall with a central staircase, and the trace of the third house is again the location of an office building with conference rooms. There is also a museum filling the space where a fourth tenement house used to exist on Farna Street. A part of the block overlooking the market square, within the perimeter of the old church, was left undeveloped. We intend to reveal the ruins of the church and to mark the gap in the development by means of openwork walls of the newly designed buildings. The void where the church used to stand is intersected by a wooden footbridge which provides access to the old city hall. The ruin monument blends into the market square, becomes a distinctive landscape feature, a recognizable place for meetings, talks and events, while bearing testimony to events of the past.
