Reconstruction of the Clinic of Pediatrics and Nutrition

The Children’s Memorial Health Institute was built in the 1970s and its condition was affected by the passage of time and financial shortages. Set amidst beautiful greenery, offering the patients the possibility to go outside directly from their rooms, the building is nevertheless spatially friendly owing to its small scale. The single-loaded ground-floor layout provides the possibility to illuminate the corridors and open them up to the greenery of the courtyards, and hence to “escape” from the stereotype hospital interior. The patient rooms and corridors have contact with the neighbouring forest. The design of the building - whose main users are children – was treated “seriously”, without trying to add any additional infantilizing features or toybox colours. The main attraction is the contact with the surrounding nature, changing seasons of the year, weather and light. The interiors kept in light tones “draw” additional colour from the outside, assuming, at different times of day, the colours and shades of lime or pine tree crowns.
A hospital - a summer resort? Contrary to appearances, those two are possible to combine.
