Competition for the Guggenheim Museum in Helsinki

The concept of the museum, a centre for the promotion of Scandinavian art, makes reference to the artistic tradition and sources of Nordic heritage – its simplicity, practicality, straightforwardness, naturalness and frankness, characterised by care of the environment, as well as social sensitivity and cultural openness. The building forms a sign in space but also in awareness. It is not intended to be a manifesto. It creates a place, an area of special activity where collective sensitivity is expanded. Situated on a road from the city to the port, the building stretches between water and a park. Its location "on the way" prompts passers-by to stop within the museum. It makes the marina and port areas become an extension of the museum space. The museum appears to be a port facility.
