Competition for a Psychology Department Building

The project was conceived as an attempt to create continually evolving spaces designed for the exchange of experiences, taking place at different levels, with varying intensity, areas of formal and informal meetings. Such a scheme, unlike those from classical schools, must imply a more decentralized structure that operates with sequences of clearly interrelated interiors - places of an accessible scale - bringing together work and study spaces. These interiors are primarily intimate, two-story halls/atria, creating a cascade-shaped space that facilitates orientation in the building.

For cognitive scientists and psychologists, the structural formula of the building emphasizes cognitive and perceptual values. The project exposes the need for conscious, deepened, almost symbiotic use of the building, for deciding on the climate of its interior and participation in continuous adaptation to the evolving needs of its users. Referring to the conscious and subconscious experience of our senses as well as individual and collective decisions often made on a small, personal scale, the school is an alternative to systemic, centralized management, generated by standards, sensors and programmers, an object cut off from its surroundings.
